Vienna is a one off design by Murray Dunlop, award winning Architects.

At the Vienna Apartments, Mitchell Street, the team faced immense challenges in transforming this part of the inner city in a series of buildings that not only improved the street but notably, has created some remarkable and highly individual apartments.

Vienna Apartments is the name given to the Mitchell Street projects, the name derives from the Secessionist impression created by the internal glazed courtyards as the building snakes through the urban block from one street to the other. There are two Phases in the development, a striking tall new building housing a total of 44 dual aspect apartments, and a further phase being the refurbishment of a series of Victorian buildings that provide 33 apartments, these varying enormously in style and size from small studios, to large loft style apartments. This is a Category ‘B’ Listed Building.

All of the apartments are accessed from Mitchell Street, and both phases are constructed over a ground floor that will be given over to commercial use.

The Apartments

The layout of this series of spaces is at first view complex. The rich character of the spaces has been preserved where possible, resulting in a meandering path from Mitchell Street through the block. Upon entry at ground level at Mitchell Street, the original stone staircase (now carpeted) and lift provides access to all levels.

To understand the layout and the diversity of accommodation available, it is perhaps best to group the apartments into three, namely those overlooking Mitchell Street (at typical plan level 2, apartments 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, the ‘island’ apartment 2.4, and finally those that remain to the Union Street side of the development, in this case apartments 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8.

The first group overlook Mitchell Street, have extensive glazed frontage, and all are dual aspect. All are accessed from the internal glazed courtyard.

The second so-called ‘island’ unit has no street frontage however overlooks two stunning courtyards. As such it is a uniquely peaceful apartment in the heart of the City.

The third group are accessed from the second open lightwell (with the exception of 2.8) and enjoy extensive glazed façade. These apartments are also dual aspect.

Although veiling heights vary throughout the property, they are generally high and the overall impression is a series of light and airy spaces.
